Outside, 11 Bit flexes its art chops with considerable verve. Gnarled, tree-like rock formations curl across the arid terrain; matter swirls within vikingtoto shimmering physics-defying anomalies; a vast cosmic sea churns menacingly. Needless to say, this is a video game-y video game which doesn’t aim to deliver a memorable narrative experience, but I’ll admit it’s got enough juice on that front to make some skeptics care and maybe fall into the trap of its rock-solid gameplay loop.
Chronicles of the Wolf is an unabashedly old-school Metroidvania that’s sure to please a specific contingent of the genre’s fanbase. Rematch is easy to understand, but it’s incredibly hard to master, and I felt like I was learning something every match I played. Like the sport it’s based on, it’s about positioning, stamping management (you can’t sprint or do tricks without it), and communicating with your team. A good team will absolutely roll a bad one, but a mediocre team that coordinates will probably beat a team of good players who never pass the ball. At first, I wasn’t a great shooter; my skills were based around being an above-average goalie and passing the ball and positioning myself well, setting up my teammates for success. But when shooting finally clicked, I ended the first game I ever scored in with four goals.

Once I’ve attacked—whether from cover or using an invisibility spell—every baddie in the vicinity knows I’m there. Avowed is surprisingly combat heavy, especially in its second half. It’s possible to play with the usual array of melee weapons—swords, axes, spears, maces—but you’d be missing out on a lot if you’re not playing Avowed like 21st century Hexen, mixing powerful ranged attacks with down-and-dirty close quarters hacking. Every one-handed weapon can be dual-wielded, so I normally roamed with a grimoire in one hand and a fire-enchanted sword in the other, raining down elemental area of effect attacks on bears, bugs and lizardmen before sprinting in to hack away. For the magic averse, it’s also possible to muscle about with a mace in one hand and a pistol in the other, for example.

I do want to make the Alters happy—they’re all reflections of Jan, after all—and like everything else these interactions can go from ordinary problem solving to all-out stress in an instant. One minute I’m just trying to cheer a slightly reserved Jan up, the next I’m venturing into radioactive territory for extra metals because I agreed to build a social room so the Jans could watch movies and play beer pong together. Finding a mining spot always feels like a journey, as you have to navigate the planet’s surface, climbing up to ledges and blasting rocks to create pathways. The Alters begins with the cinematic drama and thrill of a sci-fi blockbuster movie. Jan Dolski has crash-landed on a hostile planet to find that the rest of the crew have all died in the landing process.
Even an excellent shooter will need help against a team playing good defense. If Rematch has an obvious weakness, it’s that you have to play it with other people. I got called a slur in the first game I ever played for making a minor mistake that didn’t even end up costing us a goal. The game quickly settles into the min-maxing groove typical of survival games.
Honestly, it’s one of the best feel-good games on our list for sure. When it comes to polished, fast-paced platformers, few titles can hold a candle to Sonic X Shadow Generations. The game curates and improves on some of the best levels in Sonic history, while also giving us fresh Shadow levels that highlight his unique abilities. Get ready to feel the thrill of unlocking the Chaos Dash and the joy of flying across levels with Shadow’s Doom Wings.
